Modern Art: The Problematic of Interpretation and Reception

Section: Article

Abstract

More than a century ago, a pivotal incident marked a turning point in European visual art, leading to the emergence of a new movement that critics later called “modern art.” The first spark of this movement appeared in the Salon des Refusés in Paris in 1863. The works exhibited there faced intense criticism, accusations, and ridicule from leading critics, as they were seen as a departure from established norms. These works were later recognized as part of the Impressionist movement, which paved the way for modern art.

The rejection of the past closely resembles today’s reactions toward the “descendants” of those modernist works, which remain confined within an “isolation cage” for the general Arab audience—particularly in Iraq—under accusations of strangeness and unfamiliarity, often leading to their rejection.

In the eyes of the general viewer today, modern artwork appears as an “encoded” image with unclear features, lacking accessible meanings for interpretation. This creates a barrier that erases common ground between the artist (as sender) and the audience (as receiver). The researcher argues that this absence of shared understanding drives audiences to neglect such artworks regardless of their creative value. Accordingly, this gap can be understood through two main problems:

First: the problem of interpretation, which stems from the viewer’s lack of motivation to acquire the conceptual tools and interpretive frameworks necessary to appreciate modern art within its cultural, social, and historical contexts.

Second: the problem of reception, which results from the first issue and relates to the audience’s level of engagement and readiness to interact emotionally and intellectually with modern artworks.

The researcher concludes that reception depends fundamentally on the effectiveness of interpretation, though it varies according to differing cultural, social, and cognitive perspectives.
