This research, titled “Biomimetics in Museum Exhibition Hall Design: The Kirkuk Civilization Museum as a Model,” examines the role of biomimetics in employing natural elements and systems within museum exhibition hall design to promote local culture and express community identity. The research problem asks whether the simulation or dialogue of biomimetic forms and systems found in nature can provide sustainable design solutions that bridge the gap between nature and human perception, especially after the emergence of models that imitate form without substance. It examines this approach’s contribution to developing the design process and improving visitor experience.
The research aims to reveal the potential of biomimetics as an innovative design strategy that contributes to balanced and environmentally sustainable interior design through analyzing an applied model and evaluating its degree of natural emulation. Its significance lies in highlighting biomimetics as a contemporary mechanism that integrates form, content, function, and environmental sustainability while enriching design and academic knowledge.
The research is thematically limited to biomimetics in the interior design of museum exhibition halls, spatially limited to the exhibition halls of the Kirkuk Civilization Museum in Iraq, and temporally limited to 2000–2026. The study adopted the descriptive-analytical method. The research population consisted of three exhibition halls, while the analytical tools included field visits, site inspections, exploratory visits, on-site interviews, photographs, and indicators derived from the theoretical framework.
The findings showed that successful biomimetic application depends on integrating interior and exterior relationships and employing natural and heritage-inspired elements such as openings, arches, colors, lighting, textures, and display units. However, shortcomings appeared in ventilation, circulation pathways, and entrance size. The research concluded that biomimetics creates a museum environment combining aesthetic and cognitive dimensions while linking science, art, and local identity. It recommended developing movement pathways, improving ventilation, and enhancing nature-inspired strategies in exhibition hall design.
