Abstract

The research addressed the diagnosis and interpretation of the language of sound used in constructing the theatrical scene as a semantic carrier that produces meaning in parallel with the visual and verbal systems within the performance. This is because sound in theater is a semiotic construction that expresses psychological states and reveals the power relationship between characters. It also produces the meaning of time and place. Sound, as a language, interacts with space and achieves the theatrical production, because theater exploits the expression of meaning during performance, whether by using sound, echo, or reverberation. It should be noted that theater may combine or combine a group of sounds to produce the general atmosphere of the theatrical story.

The language of sound in theater is the organization of sound phenomena into meaningful structures. The research adopted the theoretical basis in the second chapter, which was formed into two sections. The first dealt with the importance of sound and effects in the theatrical scene, and the second dealt with semi-verbal language, which included rhythm, tone, rhyme, and coloring. The research also worked on an analytical study in the third chapter of a theatrical model, as it focused on reading the uses of sound in the performance of The Swing, written and directed by Muhammad Sabri Saleh. Then the research came out with some results and conclusions.
